How this model was built, and how far to trust it
Ground. Terrain is the SRTM 30 m elevation model (via OpenTopoData), upsampled and cut to the OpenStreetMap coastline: the Konyaaltı pebble beach, the Boğaçayı delta, the falez cliffs and the Beydağları follow this elevation data.
Buildings. Every present-day block is a real OpenStreetMap footprint (18,381 buildings, downloaded 2026-09-05) extruded to its tagged or type-typical height, with tiled hip roofs where the type calls for them. Only a few dozen carry a documented year. The rest are dated by a rule model: district windows (Kaleiçi 1750–1900, Balbey 1900–55, the Republican grid 1935–72, Muratpaşa west 1958–85, Konyaaltı Caddesi 1972–95, Liman 1975–2000, Arapsuyu 1985–2005, the hotel row 1985–2008, Uncalı 1992–2012, Hurma 1995–2015, Sarısu 1990–2012, Gürsu 1998–2020, Beach Park 1998–2020), storey counts (12+ storeys ⇒ after 2000) and building type. Treat any single building's year as ±10 years.
Vanished structures (the ancient walls, the harbour mole, the delta's farms and greenhouses, the beach tea gardens) are placed from written descriptions and old maps, not surveys, and carry a confidence flag: E established in two or more sources, S single source, U uncertain, model placed by rule.
Before 150 BC the slider starts with the Pergamene founding of Attaleia. Konyaaltı itself was farmland, marsh and gravel until the 1960s; the hypothesised ancient Olbia in the delta is marked as a site, not drawn as a town.
Population figures are census where a year is listed and interpolation between; ancient and medieval figures are scholarly estimates flagged as such.
Vegetation. Pines on the slopes and palms on the promenades are procedural; groves in the delta disappear where and when buildings arrive.
Images. Photographs, engravings, charts (Piri Reis c. 1521, Beaufort 1812/1819, the War Office sheet of c. 1919) and Attaleia's coins come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences, each with its credit; they are pinned where they were made when the place is known.
